Social interaction - Komp Pro
The challenge of social isolation, loneliness and digital exclusion
Loneliness and social isolation are public health issues that affect people of all ages and can cause illness and reduce quality of life. Loneliness has a cost, both for those affected and in financial terms for our society, and high-quality social relationships are recognized as crucial for our mental and physical health and our well-being (2024, WHO Int.).
Many seniors feel lonely
In the UK, more than 80% of senior residents in nursing homes report feeling lonely (2022, Live-in Care Agency). For those who are not digitally inclined, whether due to personal choice ("technology is not for me") or due to cognitive impairments and physical challenges, loneliness can be particularly acute.
Loneliness is a barrier to coping with everyday life at home; it brings insecurity and anxiety and becomes a factor in needing healthcare assistance. In fact, data from the Campaign to End Loneliness and other sources show that chronic loneliness increases the risk of dementia by 40%, the risk of stroke by 30%, and the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 25% (2023, Loneliness Hub) (British Journal of Community Nursing).
The isolation many feel is often aggravated by the inability to use modern communication technology, which are not always designed with accessibility in mind.
